The bright scientist

When engineer and inventor Aisa Mijeno was told that her dream of bringing sustainable electricity to remote villages in the Philippines was impossible, she took it with a grain of salt. Actually, many grains of salt and some water. After observing the nighttime difficulties (inability to do household tasks; the risk of kerosene fires) faced by communities unable to connect to the power grid, Aisa developed an electrochemical LED lamp activated by saltwater. Today, Aisa and SALt (Sustainable Alternative Lighting) are harnessing the power of the simple and scalable technology she devised to address the lack of electricity affecting approximately 16 million Filipinos and 1.2 billion people around the world. A university professor, innovation labs director, Greenpeace activist and entrepreneur, Aisa has since been interviewed by U.S. President Obama alongside Alibaba founder Jack Ma at the 2015 APEC CEO Summit, and is also a member of Kairos Society ASEAN – a global nonprofit organization that develops young entrepreneurs – where she mentors in the field of renewable energy.
“This isn’t just a product. It’s a social movement.”
