The cannabis culturist

How did a former Google corporate strategist become one of the prominent new faces of cannabis culture? Alan Gertner followed his own advice: be present and make progress. As the recreational market for cannabis continues to emerge, innovators from Silicon Valley and Canadian start-up scenes have changed course to break down stigmas and embrace cannabis as part of modern life and commerce. A founding member of Google's first Global Business Strategy team, and formerly a Management Consultant at Oliver Wyman in New York, Alan spent six years at Google in strategy and operations, eventually becoming Google’s regional head in Asia.

Three years ago, Alan stepped back and, after reflecting on his career path while on his way to a voodoo ceremony in Ghana (true story), decided to leave Google. He created Time On, a data-driven platform to document his daily routines, interactions and experiences, ranking his levels of happiness, fulfillment and other metrics. To make a meaningful next move, Alan tallied those results and added them to his passions: coffee, culture and cannabis. The result was lifestyle brand Tokyo Smoke, a melding of fashion and design with higher-end cannabis culture, featuring sleekly designed cafés, clothing and other plant-related products. Tokyo Smoke now has six locations in Canada with aggressive expansion planned across the country. In 2018, he merged cannabis brands Tokyo Smoke, DOJA, Van der Pop and Maïtri into his vertically-integrated Hiku Brands house, comprised of leaders from retail, finance, product design, content, cultivation and technology.

“Canada could be to Cannabis what France is to wine.”
