Reinventing the wheel
C2 Theme:
On the 200-year anniversary of the first two-wheeled means of human transport, inventor and entrepreneur Assaf Biderman continues to rethink not just the bicycle, but urban mobility as a whole. Assaf – with his background in physics, design and computing – is the founder of Superpedestrian, a venture that transforms everyday bikes into more powerful, networked hybrid e-bikes. Superpedestrian offers an alternative to cars, and connects riders to cities in new ways using the “Copenhagen Wheel,” a motorized, sensor-laden, attachable bike wheel that Assaf led the design of. The Superpedestrian endeavour springs from his work as associate director of the Senseable City Lab at MIT, a research group that develops and deploys tools (sensors and networked miniaturized electronics) to learn about cities in real-time – so that cities can learn about us.
