C2 Theme:
At the risk of understatement, Dean Kamen is a prolific inventor and entrepreneur, and a passionate advocate for the virtues of technology and its power to activate positive change. Dean holds more than 440 patents, many of them for revolutionary medical devices that have expanded the frontiers of healthcare worldwide. Life-changing innovations are his raison d’être, and that of the R&D company he founded, DEKA. In addition to DEKA, another of Dean’s proudest accomplishments is FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), an organization dedicated to inspiring the next generation of technological leaders. Other feathers in his considerable cap include the Segway PT, Slingshot water purifier, iBOT stair-climbing wheelchair and the LUKE advanced prosthetic arm.
“[The Segway] was a fun side project... Every once in a while, a new technology, an old problem and a big idea turn into an innovation.”
