The better grower

The farm of the future is local, organic and financially profitable – at least that’s how Jean-Martin Fortier sees it. He’s made it his mission to inspire, educate and empower the next generation of farmers by showing them how to harness the power of farm design, soil biology, agro-ecology and permaculture technology to build resilient farming systems. Jean-Martin farms without a tractor using minimal quantities of fossil fuels at Les Jardins de la Grelinette, a micro-farm he co-founded with his partner Maude-Hélène Desroches in southern Québec. The farm is known for its high productivity and profitability, with operating margins of about 60%. His unique approach, which he outlines in The Market Gardener: A Successful Grower's Handbook for Small-Scale Organic Farming, is a guide for intelligent farm design. In it, he shares his methods for high-yield, environmentally-sound, human-scale farming.

A storyteller who weaves the technical aspects of farming with anecdotes from the land, Jean-Martin has facilitated hundreds of workshops, seminars and conferences in Canada, Europe, Australia and the United States. His online course, The Market Gardener’s Masterclass, has inspired more than 750 farmers in 38 countries. Since 2015, he’s directed Ferme des Quatre-Temps, an experimental farm in Hemmingford, Québec, that’s paving the way for a more ecological and nourishing food system for the province – and beyond. As a public advocate for ecological, human-scale food systems, Jean-Martin connects small-scale food producers to larger support networks as society continues to revolutionize how we all relate to food, the environment and each other.

“Rather than concentrating on growing bigger, we focused on growing better.”
