Writer and Director, Cirque du Soleil
Michel Laprise distinguished himself in theatre for nearly a decade prior to running off and joining the circus, having made a name for himself on the basis of an audacious, immersive theatrical approach. His gift for creating innovative mise-en-scene experiences was evidenced in, for example, his adaptation of Hitchcock’s Rear Window, which saw the audience watching with binoculars from a building across the street. At Cirque du Soleil, Michel has had a rapid ascendant track, going from talent scout to Special Events Designer. He has directed several large-scale performance events, including the launch of the Fiat Bravo in Italy; the Cirque du Soleil spectacle celebrating Québec City’s 400th anniversary; and Madonna’s Super Bowl XLVI halftime show (as artistic director) before becoming the show director of her MDNA tour. Currently touring the U.S., the highly acclaimed show KURIOS – Cabinet of Curiosities finds Michel in a writer/director role for the first time on a touring Cirque du Soleil show. At the top of his creative and collaborative game, he is now working for the Cirque on a new touring show, #SodaCirque, as well as a resident show (city TBA).
