Serge Otsi Simon
She:kon, hello, bonjour, I would like to say first, what an honor it is to introduce myself to you in this forum. My name is Serge Otsi Simon, former Grand Chief of the Mohawk council of Kanesatake for the last ten years, but before I got here, this is a little personal history.
I am sixty years old and I’ve lived my whole life in the Kanesatake territory, son of my late father Roger and mother Pauline and eldest of three boys. I am a father of three boys and two girls as well as a grandfather of three boys and one girl.
I love sports and growing up, lacrosse, hockey and football were some that I enjoyed, then later in life, Muay Thay and boxing became my new passions, but the constant love of hunting and fishing are still very much a part of my life.
I did not achieve higher education, but opted for welding as a trade and later became an arborist in both private and for Hydro Quebec.
My political passions were always the social, economic, security and environment, that I saw as connecting circuits to the Mohawk language and culture. My future endeavors however, are still in the meditation stage.
My favorite quote is by Mahatma Gandhi, “An eye for an eye only succeeds in making the whole world blind.”
