Quebec’s dynamic digital creativity on display at C2 Online

Montreal’s emergence as one of North America’s premier technology hubs has been one the (many) great transformation narratives to come out of Quebec in recent years.

The province’s natural predisposition for innovation, seemingly bottomless talent pool and rich artistic tradition has spawned a world-class digital creativity ecosystem — video games, multimedia, film, music, virtual and augmented reality, and so on — quite unlike any other.

The interplay between digital industries and the business world has long been at the very heart of C2 Montréal’s mission, and C2 Online — Montréal 2020 (October 19-30) continues to shine a light on, and stimulate conversation around, digital creativity in Quebec.

 

Esports: not just fun and games

One of C2 Online’s many must-see conferences will feature longtime female pro-gaming icon Stephanie “missharvey” Harvey. A five-time world champion in competitive Counter-Strike, and a former game designer for Ubisoft Montreal, Stephanie is now Counter Logic Gaming’s Director of Esports Franchise Development and Outreach.

The explosive ascent of esports into the fastest-growing live-event experience on the planet holds some serious lessons for the rest of the business world. On October 23, Stephanie will present “The rise of esports and why it matters for businesses and communities,” where she will discuss the ways in which esports are evolving and how other industries can engage and converge with this unique ecosystem.

 

Digitally focused workshops

One of the most in-demand C2 experiences, a wide range of digital workshops given by industry experts address real-world business challenges and put ideas into practice. On October 23, Stephanie Harvey will lead “It’s ‘game on’ for the future of work: How gamers can ready us for our new reality,” presented by and Hub MTL. In this workshop, Stephanie will reveal what corporations need to learn from gamers in order to meet the challenges ahead and successfully play in the new world of work.

Getting into an innovative mindset requires shedding what’s familiar and leaping away from your core environment into completely new ones. On October 27, the workshop “Get out of your bubble: Learning from digital creatives to power innovation,” presented by Zú, will help participants discover the innovative potential of engaging with digital entertainment and creative industries to help rewire old ways of thinking, find solutions, and look at business challenges through a new lens.

 

Putting Quebec creativity on the world stage

The aforementioned Zú — a nonprofit organization whose mission is to gather, help and promote creatives in the entertainment sector to develop world-class innovative projects — recently concluded the 2020 instalment of their 12-week Focus incubator program. Each year, Zú selects up to six companies from all applicants and helps them set the stage, from A to Z, for the launch of their project by equipping them with entrepreneurial skills.

This year’s winning Focus cohort consisted of five enterprises: E.D. Films, Gallea, Gridspace, Madefire and Shaftesbury. These five companies will all receive passes to C2 Online, and be showcased during this year’s edition of HUB Montréal (an international accelerator event for businesses in the entertainment, cultural and experiential marketing sectors), taking place November 16-17.
